Victor Rud, '72 on Russia's War Against Ukraine in the Context of Geopolitical Power:
A talk by a prominent international lawyer and sought-after Russian affairs expert, at Riverside Yacht Club.
The Harvard Club of Fairfield County welcomes back Victor Rud, '72, for his second talk to the club about Russia, Ukraine, and their wider relationships with the United States and the world. Victor discussed U.S.-Russian affairs with the club some years ago, in the wake of news stories about Russia's involvement in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and of the 2014 invasion of Crimea. This time his talk will focus on the long arc of Russia's relations with the U.S. and the world, encompassing the current war in Ukraine, Russia's strategy toward the U.S. following the collpase of the Soviet Union, why Ukraine is a pivotal point, nuclear deterrence, and what leaders in Beijing, Pyongyang, and Tehran might take away from the interactions between Russia and the United States.
Victor brings a unique and seasoned persepctive to this discussion. Before the fall of the Soviet Union, he represented, in the West, a number of Soviet dissidents. He also served as special counsel to a member of the U.S. delegation to the Madrid Review Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. Victor has advised members of the Ukrainian parliament, and for many years has spoken about the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine before various domestic and international audiences including NATO, the Department of State, the U.S. Military Academy, the United Nations, and the American University in Kiev. His analyses and commentaries have been carried by, among others, The Hill, Forbes, Kiev Post, EUToday and the Center for European Policy Analysis.
