Author Nicholas Delbanco

Noted author Nicholas Delbanco '63 will talk about 2 of his recent books over dinner and lively discussion. At the Stamford Sheraton.

Nicholas Delbanco, a charming and fascinating speaker, will talk about 2 of his recent books: LASTINGNESS, The Art of Old Age and The Art of Youth.

LASTINGNESS explores the later lives of artists and musicians, some in their 90's. What is it that makes them so creative at this age? How do they cope with diminishing capabilities and still retain their greatness?

The Art of Youth, in counterpoint to LASTINGNESS, is a moving inquiry into the nature of artistic prodigies, and offers us a triptych of indelible portraits: Crane, Carrington and Gershwin. All three lived colorful, productive lives before dying early, at an average age of thirty-five.

Delbanco is the Robert Frost Distinguished University Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan (http://www.lsa.umich.edu/english/people/profile.asp?ID=243). He has published over 25 books of fiction and non-fiction, won a Guggenheim Fellowship and, twice, a National Endowment for the Arts Writing Fellowship.

Come join us for dinner and a lively discussion.

The cost for the dinner is $55 for HCFC members and their guests, $75 for non-members.
