The Harvard Club of Fairfield County is excited to welcome back 2019 Nobel Prize winner, Harvard Professor, and Fairfield County native Dr. William G. Kaelin.  Dr. Kaelin was scheduled to be our 2020 annual dinner speaker before the Covid-19 shutdown interfered, and we have been looking forward to an opportunity to invite him back in person.

On Thursday March 30, 2023, Dr. Kaelin will join us for dinner at the Country Club of Darien. He will discuss his work on the von Hippel-Lindau Tumor suppressor protein and how both normal and mutated cells respond to low oxygen levels, for which he and his colleagues Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza were awarded the 2019 prize for physiology or medicine.

Dr. Kaelin earned his MD from Duke university in 1982. He was a resident in medical oncology at Johns Hopkins University and a fellow at Dana-Farber Cancer Center where he did laboratory research with Dr. David Livingston.  In 1992 Dr. Kaelin became an independent researcher at Dana-Farber.  Since 2002 he has been working as a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. In addition to the Nobel prize, Dr. Kaelin has received many international awards for his groundbreaking research on mutations in tumor suppressor genes such as retinoblastoma and p53.

Cocktails and conversation beginning at 6 pm, followed by dinner. Then, Dr. Kaelin will discuss his ground-breaking research, and our questions.

$65 for Harvard Club members and their guests; $75 for non-members.  Cash bar separate. Business attire, please.
