jaldenweirA Visit to Weir Farm National Historic Site

The Home and Studio of Impressionist J. Alden Weir

On Saturday, May 12, 2018 (RAIN DATE - SATURDAY JUNE 2), the Harvard Club will visit Weir Farm National Historic Site in Wilton, for a guided tour by the National Park Service, an opportunity to paint on site if inspiration strikes, and lunch with fellow club members.  Weir Farm was the home and studio of J. Alden Weir, one of America's most renowned impressionist painters, from 1882 until his death in 1919.  It also served as a workplace and source of insipiration for many other prominent American artists who visited him there, including Childe Hassam, Albert Pinkham Ryder, John Singer Sargent, and John Twachtman.  Today it is one of two National Park Service sites dedicated to the visual arts, and still serves as working retreat for resident artists in NPS programs.

Our day will begin with a guided tour with NPS rangers around 9:30 am, after which we will have an opportunity to paint on site (if you like), and we will have a boxed lunch together on the grounds.  Our group is limited to two dozen, and there is very little parking on site, so we will send parking and carpooling instructions to those registered.  This is a family-friendly event, with a "junior ranger" program available for kids, and we may arrange an art teacher if enough children are registered.

$20 per person for HCFC members and their guests.  $30 for non-members.
