Character & Competence: the Keys to Effective Leadership in Any Field

HBS's Scott Snook will lead an interactive discussion on becoming a better leader in any organization or field of endeavor by focusing on personal authenticity and character.

Scott Snook, MBA '87 (Baker Scholar), PhD '96 is the MBA Class of 1958 Senior Lecturer of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School.  He is a prolific writer and much sought after speaker on the practice of leadership, whose insights are informed by experiences in many walks of life - military, academic, and athletic.  Scott comes from a family of Army officers - he, his wife, and four of their children are graduates of the United States Military Academy - and he received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered leading troops in the first wave of Rangers to land in Grenada.  While a student at West Point, he played basketball under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, whose leadership style is explored in one of Scott's works contrasting Krzyzewski with Indiana's Bobby Knight and asking the question "is it better to be loved or feared?" - see related article by clicking HERE .  Prior to joining the HBS faculty, he served for many years on the faculty at West Point, where he was the primary author of the Cadet Leader Development System, the Academy's manual for leadership development.

Scott will lead an interactive discussion on a broad range of leadership types, focusing on the importance of personal authenticity in leadership, and the theme that successful leadership is as much about "who you are" (character), as it is about "what you know" and "what you can do" (competence).  Like Scott's own career, the discussion will draw on leadership experiences and insights from, and applicable to, many walks of life.
