Harvard Club Annual Dinner

Our 2014 annual meeting & dinner will be held on Wed. June 4th at the Country Club of Darien. Our speaker will be Harvard's Prof. Elisa New, the Powell M. Cabot Prof. of American Literature.

Elisa New is the Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature at Harvard University.

Professor New is an expert on 19th century American literature, religion and literature, and Jewish literature. At Harvard, she teaches courses in classic American literature, especially poetry. This academic year she launched two separate modules of her HarvardX course, "Poetry in America," -- "The Poetry of Early New England" and "Whitman"-- and she is now developing modules that will cover the whole history of American poetry. These will launch in the 2014-2015 school year. 

New received her B.A. from Brandeis University in 1980 and her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1988, and she taught at the University of Pennsylvania for ten years before coming to Harvard in 1999. Her  most recent book, published  this spring, is New England Beyond Criticism: In Defense of America's First Literature (Wiley--Blackwell 2014and she is now at work on How to Read American Poetry, a freestanding guide to the American poetic tradition that will also serve as companion text for her HarvardX course (Wiley-Blackwell 2015)  New's other books include Jacob's Cane: A Jewish Family's Journey from the Four lands of Lithuania to the Ports of Baltimore and London (Basic Books, 2009), The Line’s Eye: Poetic Experience, American Sight (Harvard University Press, 1999) and The Regenerate Lyric: Theology and Innovation in American Poetry (1992) where she teaches classic American literature from Anne Bradstreet through Marilynne Robinson and from the Puritans to the present day. 

At our annual dinner she will discuss "New York States of Mind 1855-2014" and will undoubtedly create a lively discussion.
